When other local Rhode Island law firms had rejected the case, Ratzan Weissman & Boldt was retained and decided to pursue a case on behalf of a newborn boy and his parents in Rhode Island in a lawsuit against a local hospital and pediatrician.
They alleged that the Hospital chose not to have appropriate systems and protocols in place to diagnose and treat newborn babies with increasing jaundice and rising bilirubin levels. If bilirubin levels rise too high it can result in a catastrophic brain injury known as Kernicterus. Kernicterus can be a devastating injury requiring a lifetime of medical and therapeutic care and treatment; attendant care; surgery; home modifications and more.
As this was a case in another state, the team had to move to be admitted pro hac vice and had to spend an incredible amount of time analyzing and understanding Rhode Island law and the process of how medical malpractice cases in the state are best handled. In an over four-year period involving hard-fought litigation, which saw the team traveling all over the country for depositions, hearings and more, RWB was able to reach a resolution and settlement which will ultimately provide their clients with everything they need to keep their son safe for the rest of his life.
Ratzan Weissman & Boldt have obtained more than $200 million in verdicts and settlements. Our firm is dedicated to honorable and unyielding representation of patients, consumers, and catastrophically injured individuals in state and federal courts. These cases are examples of the achievements of our firm’s attorneys. All are real cases. However, these examples should not be taken as a guarantee that the same results would be achieved in another case.
